Occupations moved to Avatar, so what is left is built for representing a person rather than a role, and it goes deep on who someone is instead of what they do for a living.

Where these get used

Avatars and placeholder profiles are the main draw, and a matched set matters because a user list with mismatched avatar styles looks unfinished. Team and about pages use them before real photography exists, which is most of the life of a startup site. Testimonials, reviews and case studies use them where a real photo is not available or not wanted. HR and recruitment products use them across candidate flows, and the hand icons carry a lot of instructional interface work: tap here, drag this, swipe that. Community products use the avatar set for member directories at scale. Support and helpdesk tools use the faces for agent and requester marking, and permissions interfaces use the figures, where telling an admin from a viewer at a glance is the entire job of the icon.
