The short version
About image cropper
Most images are cropped for one of two reasons: to remove something, or to fit a shape somebody else decided. The second is far more common and far more annoying, because every platform wants a different rectangle and each one will crop your image for you, badly, if you do not do it first. Locking the ratio before you drag is the whole trick.

Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping discards the pixels outside your selection and leaves the rest untouched, so the kept area is exactly as sharp as it was.
What aspect ratio should I use?
1:1 for profile pictures and most feed posts, 4:5 for the tallest an Instagram post can be, 16:9 for video thumbnails and slide decks, 9:16 for stories and reels.
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
Crop to the right shape here, then use the resizer to hit an exact pixel dimension. Doing it in that order keeps the framing you chose and avoids stretching.
Why does my crop look different after uploading it somewhere?
Most platforms apply their own centre crop on top of yours if the ratio does not match what they expect. Cropping to their ratio first is what stops that second crop happening.
