Almost every product that shows a person shows them in a circle, and almost every image of a person arrives as a rectangle. The gap between those two facts is why this exists. Doing it properly means a real alpha channel rather than a white-filled square, which is the difference between an avatar that sits on a coloured background and one that has an obvious box around it.

Why does my circle avatar have white corners?
Because it was saved as JPG, which cannot store transparency and fills the empty area with white. Export as PNG or WebP instead and the corners stay clear.
What size should a profile picture be?
400 by 400 pixels covers almost every platform, and 800 by 800 is safer on high-density screens. Square input matters more than exact size, since the circle is inscribed in the square.
Will the circle look jagged at the edge?
No. The edge is anti-aliased, so it stays smooth rather than showing the stair-stepping you get from a hard pixel mask.
Do I need a square image to start?
No. A rectangular image works, and the circle is taken from the area you position, so you can pull a round crop out of a wide photo.
