About jpg to png
This conversion is requested far more often than it is needed, usually in the hope that it will clean up a JPEG that has been saved one too many times. It will not, and no tool can. What it does do is stop the decline: once the image is PNG, every subsequent save is exact, which matters if the file is about to go through several rounds of editing.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The detail a JPEG discarded when it was first saved is gone permanently, and PNG cannot bring it back. What you get is a lossless container that will not lose anything further.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
Because it is lossless. PNG stores every pixel exactly, while the JPEG was small precisely because it threw detail away. A photograph as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger.
Will converting to PNG add transparency?
No. PNG supports transparency, but a JPEG has none to carry over, so the result is fully opaque. Removing a background is a separate job.
When should I convert JPG to PNG?
When something downstream requires PNG, or when you are about to do repeated edits and want a format that will not degrade with each save. For simply putting a photo on a website, keep the JPEG.
