Why can I not open a WebP file?
Older desktop software, some printing services and a few older phones do not recognise it. Browsers are fine; it is offline applications that lag.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A small amount, since it is one lossy format re-encoded into another. At a high quality setting it is not visible, but converting back and forth repeatedly will show.
What happens to a transparent WebP?
The transparency is flattened onto white. If the image is a logo meant to sit on a coloured background, convert to PNG instead.
Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?
Usually yes, often noticeably, because WebP compresses more efficiently. You are trading file size for compatibility, which is a fair trade only when you need the compatibility.
